They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and in our suggested day trips, it’s often true. Take a look at some of the amazing landmarks, historical sites and parks nearby.  Many resort guests have  the pleasure of visiting these remarkable sites each year.  From the steepest peaks of the Sierras to sweeping desert landscapes, it’s a beautiful area.

 

Yosemite National Park  Travel the road “less traveled” to the vistas of magnificent Yosemite. Only 120 miles to the Valley floor from Walker River Resort. Take the undiscovered route south of Smith Valley, Nevada on State Route 338 to Bridgeport, California. Then travel 45 miles to the Tioga Pass Entrance on Hwy 120. This is a wonderful day trip to the most spectacular scenery in the U.S.

 

Mono Lake

Mono Lake Visit the Mono Lake Interpretative Center located on the shores of Mono Lake. This interesting museum and gift shop holds a wealth of information of the geology of the eastern Sierra Mountains and the unique desert lake. Famous American writer and satiricist, Mark Twain, wrote about Mono Lake in several of his stories.

 

Bodie State Park

Visit the historical ghost town. Travel to Bridgeport, CA, then travel the additional 12 miles up the road to Bodie. All the old buildings and their contents are preserved by the State of California. This trip is a step back in time to the old mining days. Pack a lunch and bring your camera!

High Sierra Lakes

Virginia City

Just 65 miles from the Resort, VC is one of the West’s biggest tourist attractions. Famous for the “Bucket of Blood” Saloon, the Silver Queen and the Opera House. Hundreds of people enjoy this wild, western experience. You can buy the best fudge in VC!

Wilson Canyon

Just a short 5 mile drive east of the Resort is a unique geologic structure with rocky and scenic canyon walls. Big Horn Sheep, chukar, mule deer, bobcats and turkeys inhabit this rugged area. There are several roadside parking areas and a rest area along the West Walker River. Excellent trout fishing is available throughout the canyon and you may keep your catch!

Copper rock

Anaconda Copper Pit

Located near Yerington, just 25 miles NE of the Resort off of Hwy 339 is one of the largest open-pit copper mines in the US. This mine was operated by the Anaconda Copper Company until the late 1970’s. There is the entire town of Weed Heights and a scenic look out point at the old mine. The mine is filling with turquoise water!

Tahoe Snow

Lake Tahoe

A lovely day trip to Lake Tahoe is only 65 miles west of the Resort. Travel north on Hwy 395 and into the Lake Tahoe Basin via State Route 207 (Kingsbury Grade) or Hwy 50 (Spooner Summit). Visit the untouched State Park along the 26 mile east side or journey into South Lake Tahoe for gaming entertainment and celebrity shows.

Topaz Lake

Just 23 miles west of the Resort lies beautiful Topaz Lake. Enjoy world class  fishing as huge Rainbow and German Brown trout inhabit this lake. View many of these trophy size specimens at Topaz Lodge and Casino. Enjoy a delicious lunch or dinner at the “last Nevada stop” before entering California.
